Lying Season (Experiment in Terror, #4) by Karina Halle (Heather’s Review) 5 Stars

THE BEST ONE YET!

No ominous light houses….No demented coyotes….No forsaken islands…..Just your average, everyday condemned insane asylum…..oh….and the past coming back to haunt you…….shit just got real.

“If you don’t deal with your demons, they will haunt you for the rest of your life…”

Experiment in Terror makes its way to Seattle for a visit to the notorious Riverview mental institute.

We were at Riverside, the mental house of horrors. The sign at the gate said, “Your wellbeing is our well doing.”

Completely and utterly in love with her partner, Perry tries to handle an entire week being cooped up with Dex and the infamous insecure, spiteful Jenn in Seattle.
“I want you to stay with me,” he said. “And that’s the problem. Every time you leave me, I need you a little bit more…”

And if dealing with Dex around Jenn isn’t enough to make her dig her eyeballs out with a spoon, Perry starts to see more than she wants to.  She continues to be haunted at night with her memories….and now during the day by a bitter, ruthless ghost from Dex’s mysterious past.  This ghost will stop at nothing to get revenge.  With this ghost, we FINALLY get another piece of the puzzle that is Dex and why he is medicated.

Struggling to battle their emotions and the demons from their past, Dex and Perry end up twisted in lies and it is more terrifying than any ghost….
“Everyone has ghosts that follow them throughout their lives. Ghosts of the past they wish they’d left behind, ghosts of love they once turned down, ghosts of regret and ghosts of loss. Ghosts of guilt. We all have them. I do. Roundtree does. You both do. And if you don’t deal with your demons, they will haunt you for the rest of your life.”

Holy emotional roller coaster…..good lord!  This book focused more on the relationship between Dex and Perry and their feelings for each other (although…they are both stubborn idiots and refuse to face those feelings thus far).  Still struggling to trust each other with their darkest secrets, the duo’s relationship is forever changed in the last 20% of the book….

“You’ve always been there for me, Perry. Even from the very beginning, even if you never meant to be, even when you shouldn’t have been. You’re the light in all this madness. You’re my light. I should have been with you… Oh God, why am I not with you?”
“Because you’re an idiot,” I said.

The end of the book……GGAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!  That cliffhanger was shocking and tore apart every hope I had for them and ripped my heart out!

“Dex has a heart. He just doesn’t know how to use it.”

I wanted to high five Dex in the face with a hammer.  What a douchecanoe!
Dex….this one is for you….
